Currier Terms, Slogans and Calls to Arms

ABC

Audrey Bruce Currier. Currier is the only house named after a woman. ABC was the granddaughter of Andrew Mellon, and a Radcliffe grad. An adventurer and a philanthropist, she died tragically in a plane crash. ABC is our icon and our inspiration. She also occasionally emails us, asking us to defend our house.

Bikini Brigade

See Speedo Entourage & Bikini Brigade

Bingham. Daniels. Gilbert. Tuchman

Currier’s four towers, named after famous Radcliffe alumni. Most sophomores live in Daniels. Notice the lack of a dozen or so lettered entryways, a River House staple, in Currier!

BLR

Bingham Living Room. A much-loved common room underneath Bingham tower.

C-Haus

Currier House. Simple. We often spell “house” the German way.

Currier and Mather are in an open relationship

Mather is the Currier of the river. Currier is the Mather of the Quad. We’re both concrete party houses with delicious food and a ridiculously strong sense of community. Also, trees and gorillas get along great together, as is evident on housing day.

Currierites are luscious

Currier is a frontier house, located at the very edge of the Harvard campus. Our location gives us a frontier mentality. We’re serious about protecting our house, whether it be through snarky web videos or knife fights.

Fear the Tree

Currier’s mascot commands fear, but offers love.

Fishbowl

Our equivalent of the Junior Common Room. The Fishbowl is at the heart of the house, and it possesses the largest viewing screen of any Harvard house, a disco ball, floor-to-ceiling courtyard-view windows and a mezzanine above. The Fishbowl is best known outside Currier as the site of hell during Heaven and Hell (See Heaven and Hell.)

GLR

Gilbert Living Room. A much-loved party room, equipped with a kitchen, on the first floor of Gilbert tower.

Heaven and Hell

Our legendary Halloween party. The Ten Man (see Ten Man) serves as heaven, and the Fishbowl (see Fishbowl) serves as hell. This party is free, gets packed to capacity in under an hour, and is widely considered to be the most notorious house-sponsored shindig on campus.

Housemasters

For the year 2010-2011, Harvard Law School professor Jim Cavallaro and HSPH researcher Nadejda Marques are our housemasters. Jim and Nadejda are amazing and very involved people—their years spent in Brazil (Nadejda’s home country) and passion for human rights lend them a certain flair unmatched by other housemasters. Their daughter Mara is Currier dining hall’s honorary card swiper.

Our (anything but!) regular housemasters are world-renowned British primatologist Richard Wrangham and Elizabeth Ross, who runs a non-profit in Uganda. Richard and Elizabeth are cool, sophisticated, much loved, and British. Their years spent studying chimpanzees in their natural habitat have prepared them well for Currier. They are currently on sabbatical, and will be back for the 2011-2012 year. Class of 2014: they will be your housemasters.

Lower Main (LM)

Currier’s main subterranean floor. Lower Main has everything: the dining hall, the Fishbowl (see Fishbowl), the Mousehole (see Mousehole), the BLR (see BLR), the Treehouse (see Treehouse), the Senior Common Room, the Strominger room (see Strominger room), the dance studio, the pool table, the air hockey table, the table tennis table, the weight room, the cardio room, vending machines, access to the courtyards, access to every tower and the Daniels laundry room.

Manny

Manny Casillas is Currier’s building manager/ superintendent. When you get locked out of your room, or break your window, or burn a hole in your carpet, run to his office and give him those puppy dog eyes.

More kitchens and laundry rooms

Currier has by far the largest number of student kitchens and laundry facilities per capita of any Harvard house. You may think this is trivial; just ask your friends in Eliot how they live.

Monique

Monique Ocasio is Currier’s Assistant to the Resident Dean. Monique is a great person, and a great person to know for all your administrative issues.

Mousehole

A nice little space behind the Fishbowl (see Fishbowl). The Mousehole offers a quiet brick-walled place to hang out, watch TV, practice on one of two pianos or study. It doubles up as backstage when plays are held in the Fishbowl.

PGP

Patricia Gnazzo Pepper. She has served as our House Administrator for many years, and commands nothing but love from Currierites. PGP is also a treasure trove of Currier information.

Quad Love

We love our fellow Quad houses, Cabot and Pforzheimer, and vocally express this love on housing day.

Solarium

Three of Currier’s four towers are topped by solaria: a collection of suites and a large common room equipped with a kitchen, with a balcony wrapping around each room that offers terrific views of the Boston skyline. This is what being a senior in Currier is about.

Speedo Entourage & Bikini Brigade

Every housing (hausing?) day morning, a massive contingent of brave Currier men and women rush into the Yard clad in nothing more than swimwear. When these people storm your room with your Currier letter, you’ll find it hard not to ogle at them.

Strominger Room (Strom)

A private dining hall and study space named after Matt Strominger, a former Currierite (from the 70s) and an avid photographer who died tragically young.

Ten Man

Currier’s signature suite, featuring ten singles around a 500 sq. ft. common room beneath a skylight, a private roof, a kitchen, a bar, a satellite-equipped television, and it’s own elevator. The Ten Man serves as heaven during Heaven and Hell (see Heaven and Hell) and always throws down.

Tewolde Yohannes (Yohannes)

Currier’s much-loved celebrity security guard. Simply called Yohannes by most, he knows every single Currierite. Yohannes is from Ethiopia—his brother is the patriarch of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church! Learn more about him here

Treehouse

Currier is the treehouse. But there is also a room within Currier called the Treehouse. The Treehouse is a legendary party space, equipped with a state of the art kitchen. You’ve been here on a Saturday night. You might have been drunk.

Whose house? C-Haus.

Woody

The name of Currier’s mascot. Woody looks angry in housing day photographs because he hates being dragged to the River.
